Samantha Bee on Emmy Nod & $1 Million for Support Planned Parenthood: ‘It’s a Very Good News Day’

Samantha Bee has a lot to celebrate!

On Thursday, the late-night talk show host’s show Full Frontal with Samantha Bee racked up a total of seven Emmy nominations — the same day the comedian’s fundraising campaign to support Planned Parenthood Advocacy Project Los Angeles reached its $1 million goal in “Nasty Woman” T-shirt sales.

“This is a day of very good news,” Bee, 47, exclusively tells PEOPLE. “I’m completely elated. I’m so happy. I feel like I work with the best team in late night and I’m so happy we get to share in this moment of recognition.”

And in terms of raising money for Planned Parenthood: “It was our goal for a really long time to get to a million dollars and we didn’t know if we could do it. I feel like fans of this show are so motivated and so active. We feel like we’re interacting with them constantly. They way that they stepped up and bought these T-shirts and I see people in them on the streets, it makes my heart sing. People from all across the world bought these. Nothing makes me happier than going and doing a live show and seeing people in their ‘Nasty Woman’ T-shirts.”

On Tuesday, the former secretary of state and 2016 Democratic nominee took to social media to share a photo of herself modeling a “nasty woman” shirt created by Bee herself.

“Support Samantha Bee & Planned Parenthood & buy a Nasty Woman T-shirt!” Clinton tweeted.

“Nasty woman” is a nod to a jab President Trump made at Clinton during a 2016 presidential debate. The term was quickly embraced as a feminist rallying cry for Clinton. All sales from the $25 tee will go to benefit Planned Parenthood.

“I have absolutely sent my deepest thanks to ,” says Bee. “That post made a huge difference. That was really helpful to get the information out to an audience that we’re not necessarily connected to. It was the final push of this campaign and it helped a lot. It feels like a full circle moment. It was very gratifying.”

With a lot to celebrate, Bee is taking everything in and looking forward to the Emmy celebration on September 17 — and she has a good idea of what her acceptance speech will not be, if the moment should arise.

“I think it’ll be an amazing moment to not mention Donald Trump,” she says. “I live for those moments where I can celebrate things without even thinking of him!”

The 69th Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Stephen Colbert, will air live on CBS from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sept. 17.
